Youth Academy Tournament

Youth Academy Practice Tournament - August 14th

Our next Youth Academy Practice tournament for Saber and Epee' fencers will take place on Sunday, August 14th.  Please read carefully, and reach out to Coach Jeff if you have questions. We ask all fencers to please pre-register in advance so that we can prepare equipment and staff. The goal of these events are to provide a FUN and exciting introduction to the fencing competition experience. Fencers will learn the basics of a fencing tournament as well as gain experience in a competition-style event. The Forge Coaching Staff will guide the athletes through the process, explain how tournaments work, and provide an outstanding learning experience.

Cost is $25 per student & registration closes the day before the event.

Participants will learn:
  • Proper tournament etiquette & competition expectations
  • How to properly warm-up and prepare for a competition
  • How fencing competitions are organized with "pool" and "direct elimination" rounds
  • The role of the referee & tournament specific rules
  • Tournament tactics & strategies
  • How to define success & set personal goals
  • Teamwork & Sportsmanship!

What to bring:
Fencers should arrive prior to their posted arrival time, with whatever fencing gear they have. We will provide any additional equipment they will require. Self care items should include a water bottle, and snack.

What to expect:
Fencing competitions general consist of 2 rounds. The first round is a round-robin style where fencers are put into "pools" and fence everyone in their group to 5 touches. The second round is the direct elimination table in which the fencers are seeded into a single elimination tableu and fence to either 10 touches or 15 touches.

For the Parents:
We encourage you to drop your fencer off as you would for a normal practice, ensuring they have a water bottle & a snack for the event. Our talented coaching staff will take care of the fencers and navigate them through the event. The emphasis on these events is on experience and not on results. We are not giving out medals or awards, but we will show the athletes how they placed in the final results and help them put their experience into context. Pre-competition feelings are normal, and the goal of these events is to help normalize the process for the fencers and get them used to navigating the physical and mental components in a positive environment.
